What happens at your visit?

1

We take your history

What hurts, when it started, what set it off and what you have already tried. Bring any imaging or notes from another doctor, however old they are.

2

Dr. Knight examines you

A hands on exam of the hand, the wrist and the nerve. X-rays are taken here when they are needed, and you look at them with Dr. Knight on the exam room screen minutes later, in the same visit.

3

You talk through the plan

What we think is wrong, what the options are, and which one we would start with. If an MRI or other advanced imaging is needed, it is done at an imaging facility nearby and the results come back to Dr. Knight. If surgery is needed, Dr. Knight operates at Legent Surgical Hospital in Plano.

My girlfriend had pain in both of her wrists. Diagnosis was carpal tunnel syndrome and we had some test results from a different doctor. We went to see Dr. Knight about surgery. He suggested starting on one hand and that went well.

About this office

The Hand and Wrist Institute at Dallas

The Hand and Wrist Institute in Dallas specializes in treating conditions of the hand and wrist. Dr. Knight has extensive training and experience with the upper extremities.

Expert Hand Surgeon in Dallas, TX

The hands are among the most delicate and complex parts of the body. The hand alone has 27 different bones, comprising a quarter of all bones in the human body. Our hands and wrists play a critical role in everyday activities, including writing, typing, cooking, driving, and more. You use your hands for nearly every interaction with the world around you, from turning a doorknob to turning the page.

If you’re suffering from an injury or ailment of the hand or wrist, it’s important to get it taken care of by the right expert. A hand and wrist specialist can help improve your recovery so you retain and regain your strength and range of motion as much as possible.

Comprehensive Hand and Wrist Treatment

At The Hand and Wrist Institute, we focus exclusively on conditions that affect the upper extremities. Our team offers treatment plans that follow you from the initial evaluation and diagnosis through to your treatment and recovery. We’re committed to staying with each patient throughout their treatment process. This includes pain management, surgery, physical therapy, or any combination of these options.

There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment for conditions of the hand or wrist. This intricate part of the body requires an equally sophisticated solution. We specialize in using our equipment and innovative treatments to restore comfort and function.

Hand and Wrist Conditions We Treat

Our team at The Hand and Wrist Institute has the specific training, knowledge, and experience for all your hand needs. If you’re suffering from pain, discomfort, or a lack of mobility in any part of the wrist or hand, we can help.

Hand Conditions

In addition to its 27 bones, the hand also contains 34 muscles and more than 100 ligaments and tendons. At The Hand and Wrist Institute, we have a deep knowledge of the construction and functionality of this part of the body. We regularly treat hand conditions, including, but not limited to:

Whether you’ve suffered from a sprain or strain due to overuse, a dislocated finger from sudden hand trauma, or a hand fracture resulting from a fall, we can put you on the path toward healing. The delicate anatomy of the hand requires special care, even for more common injuries like burns, cuts, or bites.

Wrist Conditions

The wrist is nearly as complex as the hand, with eight tiny carpal bones situated between the radius and ulna in the forearm. If your wrist is hurt, you’ll find it difficult to perform many routine tasks associated with the activities of daily living. At The Hand and Wrist Institute, we have experience with wrist conditions, including:

Wrist injuries can range from mild to severe. Some conditions, like a dislocation or fracture, are instantly noticeable when you get injured. Other common wrist problems, like arthritis or tendonitis, develop slowly over time.

Trauma, repetitive motions, and health conditions like inflammatory or autoimmune diseases can all cause problems with the elbow. We can help you find an effective treatment method to manage pain and get your strength and functionality back.

Our Approach

At The Hand and Wrist Institute, we prioritize conservative treatments that will get you back on track as easily as possible. Common options include immobilization, compression, and physical therapy. We often provide pain management, such as medication or corticosteroid injections, to reduce inflammation and discomfort.

We also provide a comprehensive range of surgical treatments for the hand and wrist, including arthritis surgery, joint replacement, replantation, and reconstructive surgeries.  We’ve even conducted a toe-thumb transplant. We’ll craft a treatment and rehabilitation plan that’s ideally suited to your individual needs.

What do patients ask us before they come in?

Do you take X-rays in the office?

Yes, at both our Southlake and Dallas offices. X-rays are taken when they are needed and you look at them with Dr. Knight the same visit. If you need an MRI or other advanced imaging, it is done at an imaging facility a few blocks from the Southlake office and the results come back to Dr. Knight.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Your photo ID, your insurance card, a list of the medicines you take, and any X-rays, scans or notes from another doctor about this hand or wrist. Older imaging is still worth bringing, so bring the scan from five years ago if it is of this hand. If the injury happened at work, bring the claim number and your employer’s contact.

Do I need a referral?

Most patients book with us directly. Some insurance plans require a referral from your primary care doctor before they will cover a specialist visit, so it is worth checking your plan. Call (817) 382-6789 and we will help you work out what your plan needs.

What insurance do you take?

We take most major plans, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, United Healthcare, Medicare and Medicare Advantage, Tricare and workers’ compensation. Plans change, so call (817) 382-6789 with your card and we will verify your benefits before your visit.

Where is surgery done?

Surgery is done at Legent Hospital in Plano. The appointments before and after an operation are at whichever of our offices suits you.

How soon can I be seen?

Same day appointments are often available at both offices. Call (817) 382-6789 and we will tell you the first opening in Southlake and in Dallas, or book yourself online.

How do you want to book?

You do not need a diagnosis to book. Bring us the hand, and getting the diagnosis right is the part we do.

Book your own time online

Pick a time on Dr. Knight's schedule and confirm it yourself, any time of day, 7 days a week. This is how we prefer patients to book.
